What is TMD?
TMD (Temporomandibular joint dysfunction) is a disorder that encompasses a variety of symptoms including headaches, jaw pain, teeth grinding, and ear issues.
How does orthodontics treat TMD?
In certain cases, orthodontic alignment of the teeth and jaws can help relieve the symptoms of TMD that may be aggravated by a bad bite. Many symptoms including clenching and grinding and muscle pain are multifactorial and thus require an interdisciplinary team approach. Dr. Gage will conduct a thorough exam and determine what course of treatment is best to relieve your symptoms.

What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep Apnea, a fairly common disorder, causes you to have pauses in your breathing while sleeping. You may also experience shallow breaths during this time due to airway obstruction.
These interruptions in your normal sleep cycle prevent you from getting a restful night's sleep and can greatly decrease your alertness during the day.
How does orthodontics treat Sleep Apnea?
Mild to moderate Sleep Apnea can be treated with a variety of oral appliances to help improve breathing and airway during sleeping.
In some cases, orthodontic treatment is necessary to expand the arches and improve space for the tongue as well as improve the position of the jaws to allow proper breathing patterns while sleeping.
An overnight sleep study is required to make a medical diagnosis of Sleep Apnea. If you experience symptoms of Sleep Apnea, please contact Dr. Gage at Icon Orthodontics in Southwest Calgary to schedule a consultation.
